Adam Mosseri, CEO Of Instagram: "I Think We Overfocused On Video In 2022"

“I think we were overfocused on video in 2022 and pushed ranking too far, and basically showed too many videos and not enough photos. We’ve since balanced, so things like how often someone likes photos versus videos, and how often someone comments on photos versus videos, are roughly equal, which is a good sign that things are balanced.” - Adam Mosseri, CEO of Instagram

Over the past two years, Instagram as a platform has become more about keeping up with the latest trends and trying to top any other platform that does something better than they do.

Instagram initially found its popularity in still images, becoming the go-to place to create an online photo album of sorts. In recent years, in an attempt to keep up with TikTok, it shifted its focus to video, a move that many users didn't agree with. Now- Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri has acknowledged that they went too hard on pushing video in 2022.

So.. what does this mean for my account? Don't make any content or strategy changes yet! Continue posting a good mixture of still images, carousels and videos and adjust that as you see changes in your statistics. If you begin to see images performing better than videos, start leaning more towards those! Instagram can say what they like, but you should be primarily concerned with what is going on in your statistics.

I am currently working on a cheat sheet to understand your Instagram analytics- keep an eye out for that, or comment on it to be the first to get it!
